Common Pests In Utah: How To Get Rid Of Them (Part 2)

From the first part of this blog article, ants, beetles, and bugs are pesky pests common in Utah households. Let’s get to know more of them in this second part.

4. Beware of COCKROACHES

Undesirable, unwanted, and despised – these adjectives perfectly describe the attitude of most people toward cockroaches. Who would not feel the same toward these critters? These scavenger insects look similar to beetles, but they seem oily with an oval-shaped body that can develop to half an inch long. It has two long antennae and six legs. Although they have wings to fly, some species of roaches do not fly that much.

Roaches are the kind of critters you would not dare to stay in the same room. Their unsanitary and filthy habits make them perfect carriers of numerous bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens. The protein from their body can also trigger asthma and allergies, which can lead to attacks.

Unfortunately, these pervasive insects may seem to have nine lives like the cats. They are the most challenging pest to get rid of due to their fantastic adaptability skills. Given their record of living on Earth for over 280 million years ago, it does not come as a surprise that these critters have a way to survive. They can even last for a month without food and a week without water.

DIY solutions can work on a few cockroaches, but if the source of the infestation is not found and dealt with, they will find their way back again. Hence, professional exterminators who use safe, excellent, and eco-friendly products eliminate the roaches.

Cleaning thoroughly and regularly is the key to preventing future infestations. Make sure to wipe off the spills and messes on counters. Store food in tight-fitting containers. Clean up crumbs immediately. Wash the dishes right away. Seal possible entry points such as torn screens of windows and doors, holes on the walls, cracks, crevices, and gaps.

5. RODENTS on the Rise

Mice and rats are members of the warm-blooded rodent family. They are also famous for the incisors that they use to chew. Fun fact! Rodents constantly need to gnaw on something to prevent their incisors from growing too much to the point that it will go through their brain.

Like cockroaches, rodents are threatening because they are carriers of diseases through their bites, saliva, urine, and feces. These diseases include hantavirus, leptospirosis, salmonella, and 30 more. Furthermore, as they persistently chew on anything, they can end up gnawing on pipes, wires, woods, and other materials, which may jeopardize your home and family.

Baits, traps, and state-approved pesticides for general public use can eradicate the pests. However, if not eliminated, they will cause more mayhem. Remember that mice and rats can quickly breed and produce offspring. And as long as your household provides the essentials they need, they will continue to stay. Hence, the services of a professional exterminator are necessary to eradicate your rodent problems.

Since rodents live on food, ensure that you do not have any exposed food around your property. No crumbs, litter, or spills all over. Containers with tight-fitting lids keep foods. There is no excess moisture or standing water to let them drink.

6. SPIDERS on the Move

Spiders are excellent predators of pesky insects that help maintain balance in the ecosystem. Although these arachnids limit the population of pervasive insects, some spiders are a nuisance and dangerous. Black widow spiders are dangerous spiders. They are known for their shiny black color with a red hourglass-shaped mark on their underside. They can increase in size up to 1 ½ inch long. True to their name, these species of spiders are solitary creatures. They prefer to remain hidden and keep to themselves in the firewoods.

Although they are reclusive critters, they bite if they feel threatened. The venom in their bites can result in severe and uncomfortable health problems. In some rare cases, a nasty bite can lead to death.

Since they pose a threat to humans, it will be unsafe to remove them on your own unless you have the expertise in doing so. It is advisable to enlist the services of professional pest control companies in Utah in extracting them from your house safely and efficiently.

Once gone, be sure to follow the preventive measures advised by the pros. In addition to what they will tell you, you may also work on sealing all cracks, gaps, and openings around your house to prevent another spider entry. Since they love dwelling in firewoods, keep your firewood off the ground and store it at a safe distance away from your house.

This list of six covers the most common pests in Utah households. There are other species you need to keep watch. All these pests have something in common:

  1. They need food, water, and refuge to survive, and they are keen on doing what it takes to find where these essentials are.
  2. An organized and clean home keeps the troublesome critters away.
  3. The services of a reputable and trusted pest control company will help you shoo them away.
